Background:Caldesmon is a potential actomyosin regulatory protein found in smooth muscle andnonmuscle cells. The predicted smooth-muscle polypeptide is 793 amino acids long. The high molecular weight caldesmon(h-CaD) is predominantly expressed in smoothmuscles, whereas the low molecular weight caldesmon(l-CaD) is widely distributed innonmuscle tissues and cells. Hayashi et al.(1992) demonstrated that the human CDMgene is composed of 14 exons.
Gene Name CALD1Protein Name CaldesmonGene Full Name caldesmon 1Protein Function Actin- and myosin-binding protein implicated in the regulation ofactomyosin interactions in smooth muscle and nonmuscle cells(could act as a bridge between myosin and actin filaments).Stimulates actin binding of tropomyosin which increases thestabilization of actin filament structure. In muscle tissues, inhibits the actomyosin ATPase by binding to F-actin. Thisinhibition is attenuated by calcium-calmodulin and is potentiatedby tropomyosin. Interacts with actin, myosin, two molecules oftropomyosin and with calmodulin. Also play an essential roleduring cellular mitosis and receptor capping. Involved inSchwann cell migration during peripheral nerve regeneration(By similarity).Tissue Specificity High-molecular-weight caldesmon (isoform 1) is predominantlyexpressed in smooth muscles, whereas low-molecular- weightcaldesmon (isoforms 2, 3, 4 and 5) are widely distributed innon-muscle tissues and cells. Not expressed in skeletal muscleor heart.SubcellularLocalizationCytoplasm, cytoskeleton . Cytoplasm, myofibril . Note: On thinfilaments in smooth muscle and on stress fibers in fibroblasts(nonmuscle).Uniprot ID Human(Q05682), Mouse(Q8VCQ8), Rat(Q62736)Alternative Names Caldesmon|CALD1
